Last Days to Wear White!
The approach of Labor Day weekend reminds us that the summer is (alas) almost over. And traditionally, Labor Day marks the end of the season where white clothes are considered fashionable. So, in celebration (sort of), we're tasting only white wines this Friday:
Rockburn Riesling 2006 (New Zealand) -- Fruit from the winery’s Parkburn vineyard is used to make this classically styled off-dry Riesling. Nectarines and mandarin oranges dominate the intensely fruity nose of this wine in its youth, and the palate is filled with the same concentration of citrus fruits with further hints of pineapple and peaches. The excellent balance of this wine is brought to completion by a long and cleansing finish. It will continue to evolve over the next decade.
Sierra Virgen Airen 2007 (Spain) -- The NY Times says "Although airén is Spain’s most planted white grape, Americans rarely see the wine that results. Bodegas
Sierra Virgen’s 2007 version, from La Mancha, is an eye-opener. Virtually a tropical-fruit mélange in flavor, this fragrant airén (pronounced eye-REN) has a kiwilike zip resembling that of gin and tonic. Try it with tapas like serrano ham, marinated anchovies and white beans with chorizo."
Shelter Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (California) -- Shockingly rich fruit for a dry white wine, with a ripeness and opulence second to none. The only thing that’s missing is the famous label. Only 300 cases produced!
Weather permitting, we'll be in the tasting garden out back. See you there!
